TermDefinition
Saw toothRaised cutting portion of the metal cutting band saw blade.
Tooth tipCutting edge of the saw bandsaw blade tooth.
Tooth backThe surface of the tooth on the bandsaw blade opposite the tooth face.
Tooth gulletThe curved area at the base of the tooth, tooth face and back of the next tooth.
Gullet depthDistance from the tip of the tooth to the bottom of the gullet.
Tooth rake angleAngle the tooth face makes with respect to a perpendicular line from the back edge of the saw band.
Tooth back clearance angleAngle of the tooth back measured in relation to the cutting edge of the band saw blade.
Tooth spacingDistance from the face of one tooth to the face of the next tooth on the bandsaw blade.
Tooth pitchNumber of teeth per inch found by counting the gullet spaces in one inch of bandsaw blade.
Band tensionTension that is generated by the saw wheels being forced apart.
Beam strengthResistance a band has to the feeding force.
CamberAmount of curvature in 10 feet as measured when a band is laid out flat.
Positive camberCamber as measured when the teeth are pointing towards the centre of the circle of curvature.
Negative camberCamber as measured when the teeth are pointing away from the centre of the circle of curvature.
TwistTendency for a band saw blade to spiral after use.
Tooth typeConventional, skip-a-tooth, hook tooth - different types available from WIKUS.
Heat treatmentA controlled process which imparts hardness or toughness to the teeth of a band saw blade.
GaugeThickness of the bank of a band saw blade. It is best expressed in thousandths of an inch to avoid gauge number confusion.
WidthThe nominal dimension of a bandsaw blade as measured from the tip of the tooth to the back of the bandsaw blade.
SetDistance measured from the extreme corner of the teeth bent to one side, to the extreme corner of the teeth bent to the opposite side.
Tensile strengthThe amount of directly applied pull a band saw blade will withstand before breaking in pounds per square inch.
Feeding pressurePressure exerted by the work against the cutting edge of a band saw blade.
Saw velocityRate of travel of the band saw blade through the work.
Feed rateLinear travel of the work into the saw blade.
Cutting rateArea of the cross section of the work cut.
Chip loadAverage tooth advance into the work.
